Had plenty of time to read on the plane and finished the Lynn Flewelling's sequel to The Bone Doll's Twin. Like the first part, Hidden Warrior, caught me from the first page and didn't let me go until the end of the book, where it slackened its hold somewhat. I don't know if it was because I was tired at that time (late night - had to finish book!) or if the writing became less tight. I am suspecting the former. I am definitely going to page through both books again, but this time as a writer and not a reader. Lynn Flewelling's world is set in your average high-fantasy setting, the story has a dark twist, but otherwise doesn't particularly stand out. So what is it that makes her books so readable? Certainly her characters are spot on, I love them. No card-board figures there - and yet I am not left with the same empty feeling that I normally encounter after finishing a purely character driven story, so obviously the plot, setting and dialogue are also strong. True, these books will not leave a profound lasting impression, but they were a good read and I am eagerly waiting for the last book in the trilogy. I will probably also start to check out Flewelling's other books.

Sticking to the books; also finished Raymond E. Feist and Steve Stirling's Jimmy the Hand. Some of you might remember that I was disappointed with the last Riftwar Book, Murder in LaMut, which I thought was badly written with a weak story line. With Jimmy the Hand, I was again caught up in the world of Midkemia. I found just one small source of irritation; the descriptions of Jimmy's age, which were frequent and with inconsistent information.

Received flowers yesterday from my aunt in Denmark - a "thank you", because we helped to serve the food during - and tidy up after - her birthday party. The flowers are lovely, large opulent white lilies, orange roses, yellow somethings, bordeaux berries and lots of foliage. *sigh* I love flowers.

Mother-in-law's croonies are visiting and I've retreated into the office under the excuse of work. They are all very sweet, but I think they can talk better without me around. Just found out today that she will be staying until next Saturday and not nine days as C and I originally thought, but it's okay. It is good for me in the sense that I am forced to be a bit more relaxed about how things are done around the house, although I am secretly fixing things that I'm not happy about. Like I've turned down the heat in the guest bathroom, because she has the window open 24 hours a day. She also likes to boil 1.5 litres of water every time she makes just one cup of tea for herself, but I've decided to ignore that. Mother-in-law has also settled in nicely and thankfully lets us do the cooking and cleaning. All in all with the me pulling out the telephone plug, it's a peaceful visit. C has taken a rather "lean-back"/zen attitude to the whole thing. He even watched figure skating for hours last night on the telly, because his mother likes it. :)
