If you are talking chili peppers, yes, you can get burned.

DO NOT rub your eyes or go pee until you wash the chili pepper off your hands. *no, not personal experience* :-)

Yep, sure can. In some markets in SW Texas where they sell a lot of the hottest habaneros, they have boxes disposable gloves beside the plastic bag dispensers for people to wear to go through the bins.
