Warning...rant ahead.
Apr. 12th, 2006 03:55 pmDisclaimer
1. This rant is not about you. If you think it's about you, then maybe you should take a good look at yourself. You may of course ask me if this rant is about you. Since the rant is about self-centeredness, writing to ask if a rant based on years of general observation is about you...well, you get the point, right?
2. I'm using artist in the broadest sense of the word. It applies to writers, sculptors, painters, card-makers, goldsmiths etc. etc. Just not you, of course. *wink*
3. Why do I see this behaviour mostly in artistic people? It rarely occurs elsewhere in the general population aged +5 years old.
Dear Artist,
Get over yourself. I have some shocking news for you. The world will not crumble into a pathetic heap of rubble because it does not meet your approval, not unless you have a damn big bomb to go with that chip on your shoulder.
When you decide to show your work and voice your opinion to other people, they might not agree with you. When you ask for feed-back, you might actually get it and it might not *gasp* be worshipping the ground you stand on. The person trying to help you is generally not trying to make you look stupid, believe it or not...he might be actually genuinely trying to help. Throwing a temper tantrum, however, will make you look stupid (and ungrateful). The person politely disagreeing with you is not disrespectful, nor is he necessarily wrong or stupid, he merely has another opinion. Throwing at temper tantrum or sulking because someone does not agree with you, however, is disrespectful (and rude - and as icing on the cake: It makes you look pretty daft).
People do generally not spend huge amounts of time making sneaky schemes on how to upset you. They're probably not even thinking of you right this moment (In fact, I'm not thinking of you right this moment).
