As most of you know my book seems to be the never-ending story, not because the final climax is missing, but because I'm continously rewriting it, letting the story take me where it wants like a meandering stream. This evening, I realised that my subconscious is not going to shut up just because I finished the first draft or the second or the third. My characters will reveal new sides of themselves, more detailed setting and new layers of plot will appear and this will not end until I put the novel away or until I approach it with a different frame of mind - a technical frame of mind.

The Dar Caldrin Hunt has enough plot, enough depth. It's time finish the novel, to work with what I've got and to apply the writing skills I've acquired over the years.

The only worrying thing is that it's taken me so long to figure this out.

I don't think it's at all uncommon for a first novel to sandbag us like this. The process of writing is always partially about figuring out what your process is, and letting go of what's been written.

Thanks. :)

Now I know that if something takes too long, I need to stop and take a long hard look at what I'm doing.

I agree with PJ and Deb, but I'll also add: Congratulations for having such a breakthrough, for breakthrough it is. Don't worry--rejoice!

It is a breakthrough! I really had one of those lightbulb moments, but at the same time I felt quite daft for taking so long to reach this point.

No need to feel daft. We all have those lightbulb moments at different times about different things. If you feel like being kicked, let me do it. You'll get better results (and pretty bruises) than when you try to do it yourself. >:}
