Jonesy has very fluffy fur that tangles and matts, and he doesn't like grooming. After we went on holidays for a week, we completely lost control over his fur.
If we don't shave it when it gets this bad, he might harm himself trying to pull the tangles out and the matting is perfect breeding ground for bacteria. So it's purely for health reasons.
(btw, I have great sympathy for the itching. I don't want to be excessively fussy [some people hate that] or keep reminding you of it when maybe you weren't itchy right then.)
