Argh! It's so restrictive living here. No wonder the Swiss are known to make some of the best precision clock-work in the world, considering how anal (pardon me) they are with their rules and regulations. I have a 12 hour time window to take out the garbage, which is extremely impractical, and now I got caught up with a bead shop emergency and missed my allowed vacuum cleaning time. I just managed to do one carpet before the clock struck 12:00. I cannot turn on the vacuum cleaner again before 15:00 and by then my guests might be here.

Not to mention Sundays. No work that your neighbour can accidentally see or hear is allowed on Sundays, that includes mowing your lawn and hanging out your laundry - of course there will be no reason to hang out laundry since you're not allowed to use your washing machine either.

hmmm. Maybe you shouldn't have had that cuppa, after all? ;)

The work restriction is interesting to hear about. I guess over here in the US we have restrictions in apartment buildings on when you can do laundry, and some special housing developments have agreements that dictate a lot of the outdoor appearance factors (including whether you can hang laundry at all), but that someone could tell me I could only vacuum at certain hours seems really odd to me.

But did you really mean a 12-hour time window for the trash? Because that sounds like a lot of time. You need---well, you could use one of those rubber-ended carpet scrubbers, if they're available there. A friend gave me one to try getting dog hair off ours and it works splendidly with sufficient application of elbow grease.

I hope your emergency is all better now, and that you have (had?) a great time with your guests.

--hee, I just remembered, I recently read a book where a woman is referred to by the person using it as a "persnickety Swiss lady" who wants her apartment perfect clean. She also had a poodle dyed pink.

heh...well the cuppa was before the emergency.

Well, 12 hours does sound like a lot of time, but it's from 19:00 Wednesday evening till 7:00 Thursday morning. During all other times, the garbage must stay in your appartment. It can get very stinky and disgusting, especially during summer or if you are gone during those 12 hours and are unable to take out the bags. Perhaps I'm just spoiled? In Denmark you can take out the garbage when you want to, only thing is that the can must be easily accessible for the garbage people when they come to pick it up once a week.

The rules here says no noise between 21:00-8:00 and again from 12:00-15:00 on weekdays and Saturdays and no noise all of Sunday, which limits vacuum cleaning, washing, drying, handmixers etc. If I had a regular job, I imagine I'd be pressed to find time to do my laundry

The carpet scrubber you have sounds interesting, I usually use the brush thingy on my vacuum cleaner to take off hairs or a damp cloth for hairs on furniture. I have a swiffer for the wood floors (which saved me today!).

hhahaha...what was the name of the book? (Actually the Swiss are not that houseproud and I've yet to see a pink poodle here, although I saw the smallest chi hua hua two days ago. It was so delicate, white and etheral it was barely there)

Oi.

That really is restrictive. Is it better if you live in a house?

*proud to be able to vacuum whenever I want to*

(though it would be nice to blame laziness on the rules: "Oh honey, I couldn't vacuum today! I missed my vacuuming window because I was so busy with... ah... other stuff.")

Living in a house would be easier. Unfortunately houses in Switzerland are extremely expensive, which explains why Switzerland is the country in the world where the most people live in apartments. I believe it's about 75%.

But the vacuum cleaning idea is good! I'm already allergic to the dishwashing liquid, so in the end I'll be complete unable to do any housework. *grin*

Wow... I'd expect stuff like that from Singapore, but I never expected it form Switzerland.

Now that you say it, I think that Switzerland and Singapore has a lot in common. They're both thriving economic and business centres of the world and they're both lacking space, forcing people to stack up in apartments.
