I received a stack of family photos from my cousin today, not professionally taken ones but snapshots. One where I'm reading a manual for my uncle, one where my aunt is showing me a picture book, another one where my mother is carrying a grumpy little May, while my grandfather watches with nothing but a doting smile on his face for his sulking grandchild. These are the photos that matter, photos that show emotion and relationship - and perhaps that can be lesson when it comes to writing and painting - to leave a bit of grit and not polish everything to bland perfection.

I love photos like that. I've got an old, yellowed one sitting on my desk. A baby Kimmie is sitting on a roan in front of my family's homeplace in Olive Hill. My grandmother is smiling, holding me up, my great-grandmother and great-uncle looking on with smiles as well.

The photo I've used with this post is of my nephew's first birthday party. :)

i think that's a good point, applicable to almost all artforms.
we lose something when we refine our spontainaity out of a piece, i think.

Yes, I sometimes experience it as well if I transfer a sketch.

And thanks. :))
