Sometimes certain aspects of a culture can be summarized in a single phone conversation:

Phonecall nr. 1
May: Ja, det er May.
Stranger: greekgreekgreek C? C?
May: C is not here, he's at work.
Stranger: greekgreekgreek?
May: Di ni ellenika*
Stranger: greekgreekgreek?
May: Sorry, I'll tell him you've called. Byebye!

Phonecall nr. 2
May: Ja, det er May.
Another stranger: Entschuldingung, sprechen Sie english?
May: Ja, aber ich spreche auch Deutsch.
Another stranger: Nein, English!
May: Yes?
Another stranger: Hello, this is XXX from Greece. I need to speak with C.
May: I'm sorry, C's at work, but I can give you his phone number.
Another stranger: Who are you????
May: What do you mean?
Another stranger: Are you the wife?
May: Yes, I'm the wife. *dry cracker voice*

Now I'm used to being little more than C's accessory when it comes to the Greeks, but what the wife wants to know is why someone would ask a Danish person in German if they speak English?

That's hysterical - at least the only foreign language I have to deal with when answering the phone is Danish!
