Crash! - Daft dog for sale.
Jul. 27th, 2009 03:49 pmWell, it's been almost 2 months since my last fall, so it probably was about time.
The culprit today was Lia. I've been having her on a long leash when we walk on the field, because she flushes up quail and hares and sets after them. Her recall is good, but it still takes her 30-45 seconds to turn around, which is too long for me (A Groenendael can cover quite a distance within half a minute).
Today the neighbour drives past. I'm not concerned at all because:
1. Lia knows better than to chase cars.
2. She has the leash on and she's quite aware of its range.
Everything is swell - right until the neighbour and I wave at each other. Daft dog then decides "IT'S A FRIEND!". Goes from 0- whatever max. speed a Groenendael has in 2 miliseconds and yanks me off my feet.
The leash is in my right hand, so now I have a sore right knee, a rope burn on my right hand and since it's the bad hand, it decided to swell again, even though there's nothing to swell about. I also manage to land on the right side of my jaw, resulting in an instant headache. Luckily daft dog spins around the minute I call her and the car chase is off. Of course upon seeing me on the ground, Miss Genius thinks I'm playing "snargle" and completely overslobbers me.
My only hope now is that the neighbour didn't see any of it. The headache I can live with...the loss of dignity less so.
My glasses, which were loose from the previous crashes, were sent flying when I landed and being semi-blind without them, I can't find them.
But hey! I have a dog! Who cares if I can't find the glasses? She can! Right?
...
...
WRONG!
I forget that Lia only searches for edibles or toys.
So I have to mark the area, go to the house, put in contacts and return to find the glasses.
The good news is that Lia is nice and tired, I found the glasses and that although I'm aching and bruised, nothing feels wrong like it did the last time I fell.

Date: 2009-07-27 03:49 pm (UTC)Since Lia is strong enough to pull you over, then perhaps have the leash held lightly and let it go the next time. She will come to your command so the result for her will be the same.
And I doubt if your neighbor saw anything or he would have stopped to see if you were hurt and needed help.
Hugs and take care.

The tub sounds like a good idea. Thanks.
