Despite me arranging for C to start at an intermediate level with his Danish lessons, he was still put on a beginner's course. After 2 1/2 mindnumbing "My name is C" and "one, two, three, four..." hours, he informed the teacher that there seemed to have been some kind of mix up and could he please be transferred to an intermediate course?

According to the teacher, this was not possible, but not to worry, in a few months they would be split up into groups according to skill level.

We talked a bit back and forth about what to do and C couldn't quite make up his mind, he did not want to come across as a smartarse/besserwisser, so we agreed that he should go for the next lessons and then decide. After another 2 1/2 hours with "My name is C. What is your name?", a repetition of the numbers and playing bingo, he again asked the teacher (a new one this time) if he could be transferred to an intermediate level course. Again the teacher informed him it wasn't possible, which then made C announce that he would then quit the course. Somewhat flustered, the teacher suggested he speak with the administration.

The answer from the administration was the same, but luckily I have a resourceful husband. What did he do? He switched from English to Danish, saying: "I already speak a little Danish. I speak Danish every day. I can already say my name and I know all the numbers. I don't want to play bingo."

This changed everything! Administration guy immediately went "Yeah, I see what you mean. Let's give you some tests to see which class you'll fit into."

So he has to read 3 easy reader books and write a short essay about them before Monday. He found the books easy peasy, but then he's been reading Danish newspapers for years. :)

Is that the sprogskole owned by the kommune?

Stories like these made me avoid them. I have friends who have experienced the same way.

It is. C has been avoiding it until now, because he wasn't sure about how professional they were. He's overall experience has been good, though. The teachers are friendly and competent and the lessons are well planned out - the level is just too low for him.

Wow. Entertaining glimpse of a waste of C's time. Hope it works out better.

Me too. Accepting boredom gracefully is not one of C's strong points. :p
