...and my mother called again to nag be about planting the tulip bulbs, she and my father gave us. I've lost track of the nags, but there was definitely one last Monday, one yesterday, one today, plus probably half a dozen others over the span of the past 3 weeks.

Don't get me wrong. I love the tulips. They got exactly the ones I like and I don't want to sound like an ungrateful brat, but...

- During a visit the conversation of lemon trees come up. We say that C loves them, but that we have decided not to get any because they are too much work and with a large house, 4,5 acres of land and two business to run, we simple don't have the time for delicate plants.

...and my mother promptly plants two lemon trees for us

- We mention that because we have such a big plot of land, we want just hardy plants that spread like weeds and which doesn't need any coddling.

...and my mother plants dozens of plants for us to put out in pots and that need to be taken in every time it blows and which must be kept frost free during winter

- We want lupines on our field once the trees have been planted and the field has been plowed.

...my mother wants to give me two lupines to plant on the field, dig up before the plowing and replant in the garden, and then dig up from the garden and replant on the field after the plowing.

- It's taken all my will-power, almost to the point of scolding to stop my mother from buying us black berry and rasp berry bushes - again the field is not ready for them and they would die without shelter, but of course my mother wants us to dig up all our exsisting fruit bushes in the garden and replace them with these.

- We told my parents that we have not planned the garden completely yet and will not be planting anything new this year.

...and they buy us loads of expensive tulip bulbs that needs to go into the ground ASAP

I'm digging up earth and hauling stones and gravel to make a second flower bed for the tulips in the inner yard, but it's utterly exhausting - and I could really use my limited energy and time on other things, such as cleaning the house, clearing out the vegetable beds and green house and exercising Lia. Today, I think, I finally managed to convince them not to come and put in the bulbs just anywhere, but to leave me to it. Instead they will be coming tomorrow for lunch, which means that the house needs to be spotless or else my mother will start cleaning the place for me, while she lectures me on how often to vacuum, dust, wash the floor etc. and I just don't have the patience for that.

I can see how infuriating this must be. A garden is something that grows by stages, with care and forethought to the time the owner has to care for it.

Your mother cannot give you the lupins for the field as they will die back in winter and will not be showing enough to identify their location when you need to plough. Being as how this is an open field, the dead tops will quickly disappear. So that is that one sorted.

Now, for the tulips, do you have window boxes or planters? Do what I did when I didn't have the time or energy to rototil where I was going to put them this year. I shoved the daffodils and tulips into my window boxes on the edge of my deck with the magnificent, (I thought), excuse of, 'Oh well, they will be so much nearer the house in spring and we will have such a good view of them.' Putting stuff in window boxes to replace the dead or dying annuals that need to come out anyhow is not a huge chore or a huge amount of time drained away. I think I managed to clean and plant in about 30 minutes. This was with about 100 bulbs.

Hmmm, actually I have some outdoor pots, which might work. It might even look nice if I put them all together. :)

Sounds like you need me to come over and help you with your fantastic beautiful land with real soil where plants actually grow :p

I get stressed just reading about your mom. Can't imagine having to deal with it firsthand. :P
