Metal detector - part 2
Oct. 20th, 2009 10:42 amI cajoled C into visiting one of the large Danish metal detector sites online...aaaand it did tickle his interest, to the point where he thought it might be fun for us to rent one, but where he still wouldn't be seen with one...haha.
I'll get him out on the field with me yet. I mean, the guy loves fossil hunting and I don't think looking for ancient metal is all that different from that.

Date: 2009-10-20 01:12 pm (UTC)We get a little twitchy around metal detectors, because people will dig up huge treasure hoards and take them home and then we lose any chance to see if it was packed in a wooden box that had rotted away leaving only the impression in the soil, or some delicate remains of a bag or hay. And that's stuff we'd really like to know about! But we also need metal detectors enthusiasts to find these hoards because we don't have the time or money to field walk every hill and dale with a metal detector. As long as you report any hoards (having not removed it in the first place) to the archaeologists, you will make us all extrordinarly happy.
Also, here in DK I think there may be unexploded munitions from WWII, so be careful. Definitely report those! :-)

The people living here before me, weren't that respectful and the graves were damaged in 1883 and again in 1950 to the point where I know their location only from the maps the museum sent to me, there's no sign of them unless you would start digging. It's sadly a typical farmer attitude to ruin the grave hills because they are in their way. I've gotten into quite a few discussions because of that.
I've also read up on the "Danefæ" rules, regarding when to report a find and take down its GPS location and when not, so I while cannot guarantee that I won't mess anything up (or blow anything up!), I'll do my best not to. :)
