Pooping as means of defense.
Nov. 14th, 2009 04:52 pmThis is Sort Sol or Black Sun in English. It was on the Yahoo front page today, and what I've promised to take
mnfaure and
mana_trini to see if they happen to visit at the right time of year.

We see the smaller flocks of a some hundreds of starlings around the farm in autumn when they gather to meet with the others in Tøndermarsken, and even in such small quantities they are quite impressive. This year they raided our late season cherry trees. They were here for just 5-10 minutes, but afterwards it looked as if we'd been hit by a cherry-hail storm. Did I mention how much I love living in the middle of no-where? :))
The birds of prey are of course attacking intensively during the Black Sun, and the interesting part is that, according to the Danish Forest and Nature Administration, in flight the starlings defend themselves against predators. When attacked by a bird of prey, they will try to poop and vomit it down. If they succeed in hitting the bird of prey, its flight ability will be affected. There have been cases of young goshawks drowning because they, covered in poop and regurgitated matter, lost their flight ability over water.

Date: 2009-11-14 07:32 pm (UTC)Around here the crows will heckle and harass (read squawk raucously and dive-bomb) the hawks and eagles to get them to leave the nesting area. The crows are pretty successful too.
