C: Regitze? What kind of name is that?
May: Don't you think it's nice?
C: No, I think it's weird.

C: Is Jess a male or a female name?
May: Male if it's Danish, female if it's English.
C: Poor guy.

C: Preben, male or female?
May: Male! You think it sounds female???
C: I don't think it sounds like a name. It sounds like a dish-washing liquid.

C: Jette, male or female?
May: Female.
C: *sigh*

Preben the dish-washing liquid! LMAO.

"I'll just put some more preben on my sponge here." (Actually, that's kinda ew)

Better not try to explain how Inge is a woman in Denmark but a man in Norway. :p

bwhahaha...yeah that is kind of ew.

I once knew a huge Norwegian guy, crew-cut, muscled, large tattoos and a goatee, who was called Inge. That was just very, very odd.

lol.
My mum worked at 'births deaths and marriages' here for a while, and took care of registration of names for new babies. Some people name their kids WEIRD crazy stuff. Poor C. I could never keep up with the wacked out names my mum bought home!

In Denmark, there's a list of approved names. If you want to call your child something that's not on the list you have to apply for it first and wait for the approval (my parents did this for my name) - after that it will be on the list for everyone else to use.

I've only heard of one rejection, don't know if it is true or not, but apparently the parents wanted to call their son Anus - as a variation of Janus. Another case was a boy whose parents named him Christophpher - I think it took 8 years of discussing back and forth before the name was accepted.

Yes, Kim as well - and Sascha, which is a female name in Danish, but a male name most other places in the world.

I'm dying over here!

There's a dog at the hundeskov named Polle, which to me is Paula, and I have a really hard time calling a male dog Paula!

Does it help if I tell you that Polle is usually a nick-name for Poul/Paul?
