It's pretty, it's cute, it smells lovely, C loves it...and it has become the symbol of the huge communication fail between my mother and me. That the tree, according to its label, is indeed as delicate as I had feared does not make things better.

I know it's silly, but I've become so resentful towards the tree that I don't even like being near it in case it picks up on my negativity.

It's of course not the tree, but the fact that my mother, despite numerous explanations of why not to do something, goes ahead and does it anyway, and that the lemon tree is just the most recent in a long number of cases.

When it dies, do you think she'll get it, though?

Hopefully! She did get the "do not feed the cat crap food" after one sick kitty and a 3000 kr. vet bill.

Seeing is believing, and all that. And when C actually does like the tree, she can't come and say that it's because you neglected it on purpose.

I think you will have to buy her a book of how to tell the zones a plant is hardy in and which plants are hardy in what zones.

Of course, it should be a dead giveaway where a thing like a lemon will thrive, aside from a conservatory. One has only got to look at where one's fruit is imported from, and in your case I would guess Spain or Portugal.

I think I would also start buying her stuff that won't fit in her garden, but it your idea of what to plant as it is zone hardy. Gout weed comes to mind, or ground elder, but then I have a nasty mind.

I think she'd be on to you.

I'm not sure how she thinks. She has citrus trees herself, but she also has a winter garden, plus a suitable place for them to winter, so I would assume that she knows what they require, but on the other hand, her suggestions of me putting the tree in the stables (too cold), the bathroom (too warm) or the basement (too dark and too warm) for wintering have me wondering.

As for gardening books, she doesn't read them, but prefers to just try out things for herself on a hit and miss and learn by experience basis.
